The state-of-the-art complex is designed specifically for high-volume throughput, including flexible racking for quick-pick consolidation and cross docking of temperature-controlled food products. Hanson Logistics To Invest $2 Million in Hartford, Michigan Facility
Major Warehouse Improvements Will Support Blueberry Growers
St. Joseph, MI . . . Officials at Hanson Logistics announced today a two-year, two-phase investment initiative in the company’s Hartford, Michigan cold storage and logistics campus located on Red Arrow Highway in Van Buren County. The overall initiative is designed to support the West Michigan agriculture business with a focus on providing Michigan blueberry growers with additional resources to meet the growing demand for their popular berries.
The $2 million improvement, expected to be completed by July 2009, is the first phase of a master plan, developed after extensive dialogue with members of the grower community. The first phase will increase the freezing and long-term storage capacity of the existing Hartford facility. The second phase, scheduled for 2010 at a cost yet to be determined, will include expanded deep-frozen storage space, with additional docks and infrastructure to support higher volume inbound and outbound.
The Hartford campus has a current capacity of nearly 7,000,000 cu. ft., most of which is dedicated to the storage of blueberry harvest and supporting materials. Surrounded by more than 460 acres of irrigated farmland, the facility has a 7-spot private rail siding served by the CSX Railroad.
“The blueberry industry, especially Michigan growers, has always been a very important aspect of our business,” said Andrew Janson, President, Hanson Logistics. “Our investment in the Hartford campus is the result of our ongoing discussions with our customers on how we can best serve their future needs. We are committed to Michigan growers and intend to support this industry with best-of-class freezing, storage and distribution services.”
According to MSU, Michigan is the number one state in highbush blueberry production with 575 farms on nearly 18,000 acres. Most of the acreage is located in the 5 southern most counties (Berrien, Van Buren, Allegan, Ottawa and Muskegon) on the Lake Michigan shore. In the past few years, numerous studies have pointed to the natural antioxidant qualities of blueberries, resulting in an increased demand.

Hanson Logistics Opens New Chicago Consolidation Center
Velocities™ Multi-Vendor Consolidation Begins Ramp Up
St. Joseph, MI . . . It’s big, cold and open for business. Phase One of the Hanson Logistics new temperature-controlled Chicago Consolidation Center is complete and now accepting forward inventory for the company’s Velocities™ Multi-Vendor Consolidation (MVC) Program.
Located near the I-80/94 and I-65 exchange in Hobart, Indiana, the new facility takes advantage of the relatively congestion-free east side of Chicago and is strategically located for efficiently replenishing top retail and foodservice companies. In Velocities™ MVC, Hanson operates a scheduled distribution system, picking orders from cross-docked and forward inventory, then consolidating LTL shipments into a collaborative, multi-vendor truckload. Food manufacturers benefit from a shared truckload rate and a scheduled delivery; retailers and foodservice consignees reduce dock congestion and stock outs. Transportation service also includes inbound shuttles from food manufacturers, national truckload service and Chicago area deliveries.
Phase One consists of fully racked 5,000,000 cu. ft. with 15,000 pallet positions, ranging from deep frozen (-20°F) to frozen (0°F) and cooler (28°F – 40°F). Despite its impressive size (three phases will total 14,500,000 cu. ft.), the Chicago campus is more about service than buildings.
“This is a distribution center designed under the concept of ‘total flexibility’ to accommodate a variety of customers, products and distribution programs,” said Andrew Janson, Hanson Logistics EVP of Business Development. “We’ve built our reputation on cold storage first, transportation second, so this is a brand extension of sorts. In addition to tapping into a national distribution system, customers moving product through the Chicago Consolidation Center will benefit from leading-edge RF technology, with web access to our WMS and transportation management services for end-to-end order visibility.
“There is tremendous added value in consolidating at Chicago, especially for companies currently shipping LTL,” continued Janson. “Customers can leverage latest-generation technology, an ideal location and the critical mass that is usually afforded to only the largest shippers.”

The Best of Both: Hanson Velocities™ Consolidation To Benefit Shipper and Receiver
Mid-Market Manufacturers Gain Truckload Efficiency; Retailers Draws from Vendor Managed Inventory
St. Joseph, Michigan — As the cold supply chain grows more demanding, so has the need to rethink a go-to-market strategy that balances cost and benefit. Mid-market food manufacturers find themselves squeezed by the all too frequent challenge of shipping pallet-sized orders without losing margins to LTL charges. Now, Hanson Logistics is offering a solution that gives all manufacturers access to a collaborative, cost-effective distribution system.
Velocities™ Multi-Vendor Consolidation (MVC) launches mid-September as the core service of the new Hanson Logistics Chicago Consolidation Center. Velocities™ MVC is a scheduled delivery system reaching major retail and foodservice DCs from Hobart, Indiana, where Hanson’s new consolidation center sits at the crossroads of I-80/94 and I-65. This location, east of Chicago congestion, affords easy in/easy out service to greater Chicagoland, plus forward-inventory site for service to 2/3 of the US. Through Velocities™, manufacturers benefit from shared truckload delivery while retailers gain the same fulfillment assurance across all vendors. Plus, Velocities™ web-based order and event management technology offers a common platform for all trading partners.
“Velocities™ is a win/win supply chain solution,” said Andrew Janson, Hanson EVP of Business Development. “If you’re filling pallet-sized orders, you can climb on board and share the delivery cost with other manufacturers with the benefit of “fixed pricing”. You can leverage that capability in pursing business relationships in new markets and with larger customers. From the consignee perspective, your docks are less congested and your order-fill rate is higher.”
For an average manufacturer, Velocities™ offers a transportation savings of approximately 30% compared to go-it-alone LTL. That can often be the difference between profit and loss in servicing all required DCs in a retail or foodservice network. In addition, Hanson Transportation Management Service, the managing department behind Velocities™ operations, works closely with client procurement and logistics to engineer a robust solution that leverages backhauls and continuous moves for even greater savings.
“By joining Velocities™, you’re tapping into a web-based order management system and the critical mass of national distribution system,” continued Janson. “Velocities™ essentially levels the playing field that has traditionally favored those producers who have the technology infrastructure and the volume for truckload efficiency.”

Cole's Follows Trend, Outsources Transportation
Business Review, by: B. Candace Beeke
Following a growing trend of manufacturers outsourcing transportation, Cole's Quality Foods Inc. in Grand Rapids hired Hanson Logistics in St. Joseph to handle the garlic bread maker's transportation management.
A trio of issues in transportation have pressured many middle-market manufacturers to consider outsourcing their supply chain management, Hanson vice president of business development Andy Janson said, including diesel prices and stricter hours of service rules for drivers, which contributed to a shortage of drivers over the past few years.
"The focus on the supply chain is very critical, and you have to have expertise in that," Cole's president, John Sommavilla, said from the company's Muskegon plant. "It's hard to get carriers with all the things happening in transportation, with the hours of service ... They have access to so many different carriers we wouldn't have access to."
Hiring Hanson also eased the process of finding carriers around Cole's newly opened plant in Iowa.
Companies at a certain sales threshold continue to seek out third parties to handle transportation, Janson said.
"That transportation spend is getting a lot of attention. People are taking a very hard look at how they manage transportation," he said. "They're going in two directions - either they're upgrading their system, the tool they use to manage transportation, or they may recognize that's quite a bit of capital equipment and that's beyond their expertise, (and say), 'Let's do what we do best, which is make a product and turn over that responsibility to the experts in the industry."
While outsourcing transportation may end up being a "cost neutral" venture, it comes with soft benefits, such as less billing and management to deal with, Janson said.
"Instead of 50 carriers, they manage our performance. We manage the 50," he said.
For some companies, it might not be a good move at all.
"It's someone with $5 million or less with freight spend" who would be a good candidate, Janson said.
"You get to a certain level, and it makes sense to manage yourself. These freight-management systems can be expensive. You need to meet a certain threshold."

Hanson Extends Helping Hand In Maple Leaf Farms Storm
Freak Straight Line Winds Damage Company’s Refrigerated Distribution Center
St. Joseph, Michigan . . .They came out of nowhere early one morning and within seconds, straight-line winds ripped the metal siding off the Maple Leaf Farms refrigerated distribution center, exposing racks of frozen duck entrees to the blustery spring morning.
“It took every one by surprise, even the National Weather Service,” said Don Ratliff, Vice President of Operations, Maple Leaf Farms. “We put a call into Hanson Logistics as soon as we saw the extent of the damage. They responded quickly, and we were able to minimize product loss and keep our distribution process pretty much intact. But it was quite an ordeal.”
That day, March 16, 2006, saw Hanson Logistics launch an around the clock shuttle and warehouse operation to move fresh and frozen ducks and poultry from the damaged Milford, Indiana facility to Hanson’s Benton Harbor, Michigan refrigerated warehouse 71 miles to away. The intense, short-term project would eventually require product relocation to two other nearby Hanson facilities. Hanson dedicated two Hanson owned and operated trucks, reefer trailers and drivers to shuttle the finished production from the Milford, IN processing facility to the Hanson facilities.
All in all, more than 3,800 pallets were relocated and Hanson warehouse staffing was more than doubled, with crews working 24/7. Hanson IT moved quickly to replicate the order processing, scanning and information management processes that had been in place at the damaged distribution center.
Once all the product was relocated, Maple Leaf Farms relied on Hanson Logistics to resume shipping of more than 60,000 cases of frozen entrees per week, taking full advantage of Hanson’s turnkey temperature controlled supply chain services: warehousing, order processing, transportation and information management.
“The emergency response and teamwork exhibit by every Hanson associate, many of whom worked very long and hard days, exemplify the ‘Yes, We Can!’ attitude of this organization,” said Andrew Janson, VP of Business Development. “We're glad that Maple Leaf Farms was able to overcome the tremendous obstacles created by the storm damage with minimal disruption in customer service and order fulfillment.”
Repairs to Maple Leaf Farms distribution center will be completed in early June, with full operation resuming later in the month. Hanson will continue to provide the company with transportation and distribution services.

Hanson Logistics Launches Refrigerated Freight Consolidation Program
Midwest LTL Consolidation Reaches Key Points
St. Joseph, Michigan . . .Customer reaction to Hanson Logistics new freight consolidation offering has been extremely positive as the company builds critical mass in its new multi-temperature consolidation program.
The new service, offered from the Benton Harbor, Michigan and Lafayette, Indiana logistics campuses, leverages the company’s location, expertise and technology to meet the growing need for more case intensive orders and LTL shipments. The program is centered in a distribution area reaching numerous key points, including Chicago, Detroit, Columbus, Memphis, St, Louis and Atlanta. In addition to offering its customers the cost-efficiency of load consolidation, Hanson also provides end-to-end supply chain visibility and event management through TMS technology.
“The reality of today’s supply chain is that retailers want to receive one consolidated truckload,” said Andy Janson, Hanson VP of Business Development. “This puts small and mid-sized processors in an awkward and often costly situation, in that they seldom have the orders to make up a full truckload. Our freight consolidation program, while attractive to large volume processors, delivers greatest value when individual shippers collaborate. We get them there cost-effectively and on a predictable, manageable schedule.”
The new freight consolidation program is a natural extension of Hanson’s transportation management services, launched earlier this year to provide transportation services to clients wanting the benefits of web-based visibility plus more knowledgeable capacity buys and lane management. The company’s Benton Harbor, Michigan and Lafayette, Indiana locations are attractive options for serving the Chicago area, without having to fight gridlock to reach other points.
“We continue to develop more sophisticated, national supply chain solutions for dry and temperature-controlled products,” continues Janson. “But having a strategic warehouse location in a vibrant market and a cost-shared distribution program are pretty fundamental to efficient logistics, and we intend to grow this segment of our service offering.”
