Strategically located on I-65 just north of Indianapolis and south of Chicago, Lafayette is within a half day drive of 40% of the US population. Location, workforce and infrastructure make Lafayette attractive to Subaru, Wabash National, Caterpillar, and Eli Lilly, just to name a few who have a significant manufacturing presence in this emerging market known mostly as the home of Purdue University. Location was the determining factor in Hansons 1995 decision to purchase a deep-frozen distribution center in Lafayette, expanding the facility in 2001.
Lafayette was really the first step toward becoming a 3PL, says Andy Janson, Hanson Logistics VP of Business Development. The campus has all the attributes: ideal location, deep frozen storage and cooler rooms, rail service, RF, pool distribution, and a great operations staff. Were able to serve the processing community while also packaging cost-effective transportation and distribution programs for regional and national strategies.
Pool distribution is the fastest growing segment of Hanson Logistics services, and Lafayette is at the heart of the matter. Andy believes the companys LeanLogistics On-demand TMS, growing carrier base and company-owned unit will make Lafayette a significant hub in transportation services.
Our transportation capabilities first and foremost support our warehouse customers, continues Janson. Were also attracting shippers outside of our customer base who need to move product in our lanes or to the retailers on our delivery schedule. Were building critical mass that makes Lafayette, its location and technology, a great asset.
As a USDA inspection facility, Lafayette processes rail and truckload export orders headed for Mexico and the Far East. The more than 7 million cu. ft. capacity is divided among 192 blast freezing positions, deep frozen storage for ice cream, frozen and cooler for eggs and perishables. Customers can track inventory and plan orders based on real-time inventory data. Our workflow and pallets are controlled by a barcode license plate; tracking product from receiving and put-away to picking and trailer loading. This assures greater accuracy, while expediting quick turns and shipping availability.
